The Mixed Choir of the European Capital of Culture is a choral group uniting singers with diverse backgrounds in musical performing. The choir performs Estonian and Nordic music, ranging from beloved classics to modern compositions with innovative sound and form. The choir is led by conductor Veronika Portsmuth, PhD.
The choir was formed in 2008. It was initiated by creative people involved in preparations for European Capital of Culture events in Tallinn, 2011. The choir set an aim to establish choral singing as an important part of Estonian national culture and introduce it all over the world.
The choir has participated and received nominations at choral singing contests and festivals in China, Vietnam, Indonesia, Austria, Latvia and Malta. It has been a promoter of Estonian Song Festival tradition, taking part in the festivals in 2011, 2013 and 2014. It has given individual and collaborative concerts in Estonia and abroad (in 2016, In London and Cambridge).
In 2015, the choir performed new multi-media act Love of the Universe based on Urmas Sisask´s music, attracting 1,000 visitors at Tallinn Vaba Lava theatre. In 2016, the plans include publication of its first CD with a full programme of Estonian and Nordic music. The choir is in a dynamic development phase, its main focus is on performing varied forms of choral music and regular presentations of Estonian choral singing traditions globally.
The choir has its traditions, including Christmas season concerts and intensive rehearsal weekends twice a year to prepare for international contests or exciting festivals. The social life includes winter holiday party and a bike tour in Estonian countryside, the new season is opened in August by taking care of the statue of composer Konstantin Türnpu, and the season is concluded in June with a specially selected concert or performance.
